Argentina Standards: Certification of Plastic Food Packagin

Postby qszheng_forum » Mon Nov 17, 2008 1:40 pm

Labeling of packaged foods containing certain vegetable ingredients must place on the label the contents by type of vegetable (see Resolutions SPRRS#107/2005 and SAGPyA #471/2005).

On June 6, 2001, ANMAT, the Argentine regulatory agency for food and drugs, issued Disposicion 3457/2001, which requires that all packaging and equipment in contact with food for human consumption must:

1) Undergo an application process and receive authorization from INAL, the ANMAT department specifically concerned with food and food packaging;

2) Receive approval for free transit (Libre Circulacion) from Argentine Customs.

The forms for this procedure are available at www.anmat.gov.ar/html
The forms require detailed descriptions of the packaging or equipment, including the materials and chemicals used in their manufacture.

Although this regulation has been in place for some time, INAL, the ANMAT department specifically concerned with food and food packaging, has been implementing it in stages, such that Argentine importers have only recently begun to ask their suppliers to re-register under the newest certification regime. As of November 7, 2003, Argentine Customs has begun to phase in enforcement of these regulations, meaning that some shipments that previously would have been allowed to enter without the documentation may now be detained.
