Nicaragua Import Regs.: Biotech products

Postby bridgat » Tue Nov 18, 2008 5:57 am

An executive decree on August 13, 2003 provided for the establishment of a commission for risk analysis of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). As of July 2004, grain imports into Nicaragua must be certified by an interagency commission to determine that the imported product either contains no genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or that any GMOs in the product pose no health or environmental risk. The commission is led by the Ministry of Agriculture's Director General for Agricultural Protection and Safety, and includes representatives of several government agencies, institutes and universities.

Complete information regarding government requirements in order to request a permit for the importation of biotech crops can be found in Item 114 of Decree 59-2003.
