Canada Transportation: Trucking Industry

Postby bridgat » Mon Nov 17, 2008 12:24 pm

The trucking industry in Canada is divided into three main sectors: for-hire carriers (specializing in freight transportation); courier companies (specializing in small package delivery); and private company fleets that deliver their own goods.

The for-hire trucking sector is primarily involved with intra-continental trade in North America and is the focus of the KPMG study. In Canada, this sector consists of approximately 80,000 large trucks with a registered weight of 4.5 tons or greater. The for-hire trucking sector can be further sub-divided into two sub-sectors, truckload (TL) and less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers. TL carriers typically move full loads from the shipper's location to a single destination. LTL carriers generally handle smaller shipments that are then sorted and consolidated with other shippers' freight and dispatched as a full truckload to a receiving terminal. Individual shipments from that terminal are further sorted for local delivery.
