Mozambique SADC -- Regional Integration

Regional Economic Integration - SADC: Mozambique is a member of SADC, a trading block comprising fourteen southern African countries. Eleven members of SADC, including Mozambique, are signatories to the organization's Trade Protocol that calls for the elimination of tariff and non-tariff barriers between the signatory states over a 12-year period. Launched in September 2000, tariff reductions under the first phase of the agreement began in July 2001 on 47% of goods, although many of these already have no or very low tariffs. Gradual reductions in tariff rates will continue until 2008 when 85% of goods will be trading without tariffs. Final elimination of tariffs and non-tariff barriers is to occur by 2012. However, tariff reduction schedules on sensitive products and non-tariff barriers are under discussion. If agreement can be reached, Mozambique will enjoy free access to most countries in a region of over 200 million people with a GDP of approximately $275 billion.
