Vessels should request entrance permission from Zeebrugge Port Control on Ch 71 at least 1 hour before arrival at Zand Lightbuoy.
Vessels in the shallow draught channel bound for Zeebrugge are requested to report to Zeebrugge Port Control on Ch 71 when passing the A2 Lightbuoy.
Note: LNG vessels and tugs should not communicate on Ch 08 but should use the appropriate area radar VHF channel.
Health regulations: The Master must sign the Maritime Declaration of Health issued by the pilot.
Pratique is normally granted at the pilot station, providing the health situation is satisfactory, any advice on health matters is also obtainable from the pilot service.
Derat and Derat Exemption Certificates can be renewed.
Customs and immigration: The Master is required to hand in properly completed, dated and signed IMO forms, Crew List and Passenger List in duplicate. These should be handed in as soon as possible, at the latest within 12 hours after arrival, to the office of the Maritime and River Police, Tel: +32 50 557630, Fax: +32 50 557646. This can be done directly or via agent.
The Master is required to report immediately to the Maritime Commissioner any stowaways, should there be any on board. The Master will be responsible if stowaways disembark without the permission of this authority.
Yachtsmen and passengers should be in possession of a valid passport, (or ID card) and eventually of a Benelux or Schengen visa.

Standard messages: None, except for vessels with draft restrictions, which will be advised of river tidal levels.
Flags: Vessels are obliged to fly their national colours when entering and leaving the port and from sunset on Sundays and public holidays. On Good Friday, they should fly their colours at half-mast
Notices of readiness: Normally tendered on arrival at pilot station or on berthing.
General notices & regulations: The transport and the handling of explosives and ammunition as well as the entry into the harbour of vessels loaded with such goods is subject to a prior written authorisation delivered either by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy Mining Administration - Explosives Department or by the Ministry of Defence.
The authorisation obtained must be notified in duplicate by the holder to the "Maatschappij van de Brugse Zeevaatinrichtingen", P. Vandammehuis, Isabellalaan 1, B-8380 Zeebrugge,
at least 5 days before:

1.

The transport and/or the handling of ammunition and/or explosives in the harbour area of the MBZ;

2.

The berthing of the vessel loaded with explosives and ammunition.

The Port Authorities can deny entry to the port to explosives and/or ammunition or other hazardous cargo. All hazardous cargo (IMO-registered) on board must be reported to the Port Authority 24 hours prior to the arrival of a vessel.
The Harbour Master must be given 48 hours prior notice stating the date and the expected hour of arrival of vessels loaded with explosives or ammunition. The notice should be immediately confirmed in writing. Any change in the expected time of arrival must immediately be brought to the notice of the Harbour Master and confirmed in writing.
Vessels loaded with explosives or ammunition may only call at the outer harbour at the time authorised by the Harbour Master.

 

Navigation

Port limits: Northern: A line drawn between the seaward end of the 2 outer jetties.
Southern: Boudewijnsluis Lock.
Sea buoys, fairways and channels: The approach to Zeebrugge starts at the Wandelaar Pilot station, 18nm W of the port, where the pilot boards. Direct access to the port is formed by the "Pas van het Zand", a beaconed and radar controlled channel with a length 2,000m, width 600m, depth, for a width of 300m, 13.5m at MLWS.
Fairways:

1.

A deep draft channel called "Het Scheur" and "Ribzand";

2.

A coastal channel named "Wielingen".

Baudouin Canal (for Brugge):
The total length of the Baudouin Canal is 10.2km, the length between the Visart Sea Lock and the bridge at Dudzele is 6,265km. The width at the water surface is 70m between the Visart Sea Lock and Herdersbrug, the width at the bottom is 22m.
The water depth is as follows, 8.4m + Z(-4.9m) + canal level Z(+3.5m), from 10.2-8.8km onwards to Bruges inner port, will be deepened to 8.0m.
Pilot: Sea pilotage is compulsory, boarding area "KB" Buoy, 20nm NW of the port, position 51°21.08'  002°42.91'E.
Vessels calling at Zeebrugge should give their ETA at the Wandelaar Pilot Station, via Ostend Radio or via a local agent. Wandelaar Pilot is stationed 2nm W of the "SW Akkaert" Buoys.:

If pilot is required from Zeebrugge lock to Zeebrugge Inner Port, vessels should request this via VHF Ch 68 as soon as they get into contact with the "Lockmaster Zeebrugge" and inform him about the draft.
Upon departure: A pilot should be requested through the Lockmaster's Office, via the agent, at Zeebrugge 1 hour prior to sailing.
Anchorages: Near "AN" Buoy for vessels with a draft of more than 9.7m, for other vessels near "Scheur-Zand" Buoy.

About 2.25nm NE of the harbour entrance the E going stream, mean direction 075°, begins at -0310 HW Zeebrugge. The W going stream, mean direction 253°, begins at +0210 HW Zeebrugge. The spring rate in both directions is 2.5kn.
Off the harbour the E going stream begins at -0300 HW Zeebrugge and at springs has a mean rate of 2kn from 2 hours before to 1.5 hours after HW Zeebrugge, with a maximum rate of 4kn at -0100 HW Zeebrugge. At neaps the mean rate is 1kn from 2 hours before to 1 hour after HW Zeebrugge with a maximum rate of 2kn.
Dock density: 1025.
Weather: Prevailing winds: SW'ly.
Principal navigation aids: On the W and E entrance of the harbour respectively a lighthouse showing Oc G 7s 31m 7M and Oc R (7) 31m 7M.
Lighthouse on Old Mole (51°20.9'N  03°12.2'E) Oc(3) 15s 26.4m.
Leading lights, (indicating channel axis), 136° and 154°.

Traffic schemes: A VTS service centre is located on the W'ly entrance of the new outer harbour, 51°21.6'N  003°11.0'E.
Restrictions: Vessels with draft exceeding 12m are dependent on the tide for entry.
The Pierre Vandamme Lock: Length 500m between outer gates, width 57m, sill depth Z(-15m) MLWS. The water level in the inner port is at Z(+3.50m) MLWS, according to the level of the tide in the outer port the water depth in the lock varies between 15-18.5m.
The Visart Lock: Length 210m, width 19.7m, sill depth Z(-5.50m)MLWS, the water level in the Baudouin Canal is at Z(+3.50m), according to the level in the outer port the usable water depth in the lock varies from 5.5-9.0m. Currently closed.
Brugge: There is an air draft restriction of 48m and a max width restriction of 21m.
Tugs: From Lightbuoy "Scheur-zand" there are tugs permanently available, bollard pull, 37-45t, extra tugs are available on request if contacted on VHF
Ch 71, at least 6 hours in advance.
Bruges: Tugs are available.
Application should be made to Port Control, Zeebrugge on VHF Ch 71 at least 6 hours in advance.

Berths and Cargo

Names/Nos: OUTER PORT:
The "Leopold II dam", (Quays No 101-109), offers berthing space for general cargo and passenger vessels, it also has a double berth Ro-Ro terminal, operated by P&O North Sea Ferries, a bunker station (Belgische Bunkeroliemaatschappij) and a gas freeing station (Euroservices).
P&O Stena Line operates a Ro-Ro Terminal with 4 berths including a double deck, double lane berth, (Quays No 110-113).
The outer port accommodates several Ro-Ro and container terminals as follows:
Ro-Ro Terminals:
The public terminal operated by the Port Authority for P&O Stena Line, (Quays No 110-113); the Swedish Quay Terminal, (Quays No 702-705) and the Britannia Dock Terminals, (Quays No 608-613), as well as the StoraEnso Terminal, (Quays No 140-143) are all operated by Sea-Ro Terminal; the Dart Line Wielingendock Terminal, (Quay No 144) is operated by CTO.
Container Terminals:
The Ocean Container Terminal Hessenatic Zeebrugge or OCHZ, (Quays No 201-206), are operated by Ocean Container Terminal, Hessenatie Zeebrugge, (OCHZ). Flanders Container Terminal, (FCT): Quays No 120-123. An area of 45ha storage capacity, quay length of 1,925m at a depth of up to 15m.
The Container Terminal Albert II Dock South. An area of 100ha storage capacity, quay length of 900m with a depth up to 16m.
The northern part of the Albert II Dock will also be dedicated to container traffic. The western part is reserved for Ro-Ro traffic. A new jetty will offer two berths for deep-sea Ro-Ro vessels.

There are 8 gantry cranes, West Quay: 2, SWL 45t; 1, SWL, 35t; East Quay 2, SWL 40t + 3 Noell super post-Panamax, SWL 65t. There are 21 straddle carriers with lifting capacities of 33t available.

West Quay is served by a remote controlled wagon shunting system.

           

Reefer installation:
General: Special care is paid to chilled and deep frozen container cargoes during their stay on the terminal. Several hundreds of containers with perishable goods and deep frozen products can be maintained at the desired temperature.
There are various systems available on the OCHZ Terminal:

1.

Mechanical cooling, (conairs), 76 slots: Containers are kept cool by cold air circulation. The system can be used for chilled containers and for deep-frozen products.

2.

Cryogenous cooling, (conairs), 60 slots: The system uses liquid nitrogen. It can be used on deep frozen products, either through direct injection into the cargo space or by means of a cargo clip on or cryo-tower unit. The latter alternative is also possible for chilled products.

3.

Integrated Containers: Have a built in chilling system, powered by a diesel electric or a propane engine.

 

Containers are usually stacked on deck and are connected to the ships engines or stand-by engines. Capacity 60 units, (expansive).

4.

Mobile liquid nitrogen installation (deep-frozen cargoes), with a capacity of 400 slots.

The terminal for fruit and perishables is operated by Sea-Invest, Belgian New Fruit Wharf (BNFW). It also includes the deep freeze warehouses of Flanders Cold Centre.
The terminal for agricultural products and agri-bulk, timber, general cargo traffic and new cars is operated by Combined Terminal Operators (CTO).
The storage terminal for liquid products is operated by Tameco NV.

THE SOUTH CANAL DOCK:

Southern Canal Dock: The Southern Canal Dock with the present 1,300m of quays at a depth of 18.5m accommodates 3 car terminals:
The terminal at the Western Quay, formerly operated by the Zeebrugge, Behandelingsmaatschappij, (ZBM), is currently not operational. (Quays No 501-505); The Canada Terminal, is operated by Sea Ro Terminal at the Eastern Quay (Quays No 530 and 531), with the distribution centres of CdMZ and Bridgestone - Firestone.
A second car terminal is operated by Toyota with the third car terminal operated by Wallenius-Wilhelmsen Lines.
On completion the total quay length of the basin will be 5,230m.

Cargo: The Fluxys LNG Terminal has an unloading capacity of up to 12,000m3LNG/hr.
Barges: Barges can reach the port of Bruges and Zeebrugge via inland waterways through the lock at Bruges. Length 115m, width 12m and depth 4.3m. Mon-Sat 0800-1200hrs and 1200-1700hrs, closed on Sun and holidays.
Ballast/slop reception: Ballast and slop facilities are carried out by companies accredited by the Port Authority and agent.
Industrial cleaning and waste treatment is available from Marpos NV at Herdersbrug, L Coisequkaai 43, B-8380 Dubzela, Tel: +32 50 598801, Fax: +32 50 598802.
Security: A private security company can be arranged on request through agent.
Safety: All dangerous cargo (IMO) information is to be sent to the Port Authority through the agent 24 hours prior to arrival, excluding Sat, Sun and holidays.

 

General

Repairs: Vessel and container repair facilities available.
Docking facilities: There is a slipway on the W quay of the Prince Philip Dock, Quay No 305, which is currently not in operation. The actual maintenance of ships is carried out by the ship owner.
Slope 248m; width of cradle 17.5m; length of cradle 76m. Capable of handling ships up to 1,000t, the transfer area has a length of 8m; width 25m.
There is a tower crane available, lifting height 30m; max reach 30m; lifting capacity, 1.8t with jibs at 29m, 6t with jibs at 11m.
Several ships can use the slope and transfer area simultaneously.
The area of the adjacent grounds are 3.8ha which can be used by various ship repairs.
Bunkers/water/stores: Fresh water: Available.
Bunkering: A bunker depot is available providing service throughout 24 hours. Bunkers can also be delivered by barge if required.
Oil Transfer Procedure list is to be completed before bunkering is started.
Medical facilities: Fabiola-Blankenberge Hospital, 7km.
Transport: Nearest airport: Ostend 30km, Brussels National Airport 110km.
Nearest railway: Zeebrugge, (local), Brugge 14km. All quays and terminals are railway linked.
All terminals within the port have rail facilities, several trains per day, NEN/CNC Network, Railtrans, Transfracht Eurail cargo, Intercontainer Interfrigo and TRW provide a link between the port and the major industrial centres of Europe.
B-Cargo: The "Dry Port Zeebrugge" will be operated by Inter Ferry Boats in the near future.
Road: There are two 4 lane major roads which link the port with the European E40 and the E17 motorways, providing direct access to the hinterland in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy.

The Toyota Terminal in the inner port will be equipped with a 600m quay wall, the Southern Canal Dock will be further dredged.
In the southern inner port a zone of 100ha will be made available for added storage and distribution.
By converting the Visart Sea Lock into a navigable channel, 340ha of port terrains can be made available for lock free Ro-Ro handling in a new tidal port area.
