Port description

Location: The port of Guangzhou is situated at the head of the Pearl River estuary. The strategic location of the port makes it one of China's busiest container ports.
General overview: Guangzhou (originally Canton), consists of Downtown, Huangpu, Xinsha and Nansha New Port areas with 617 berths and accommodation for small cargo vessels and feeders, including Ro-Ro, working the river system and the Chinese coast. There are 6 port operation areas with 51 berths for vessels over 10,000DWT. Hong Kong and Kowloon are served by passenger ferries from the port. The deeper ports of Huangpu and Xinsha lower down the river take larger vessels.
The port mainly handles the loading and unloading of crude oil, coal, grain, fertiliser, steel, mineral ore, containers (including barging at wharf and anchorage).
Imports: Grain, petroleum, fertiliser, ore, steel and general/container cargo.
Exports: Rice, grain, bauxite, sugar, pig iron, general cargo.
Traffic figures: Approx 340,000,000t of cargo and 9,140,000TEU handled annually.
Load Line zone: Summer.
Max size: Old harbour: Draught 5.8m FW.
Xinsha: Draught 9.0m FW. LOA/beam no restrictions up to Cape size. Oil berth max draught 10m FW.
Nansha Port: Bulk cargo vessels with draught of 13.5m and 4th and 5th generation container vessels, up to 50,000DWT can enter Nansha port in favourable tidal conditions.

Navigation

Sea buoys, fairways and channels: The main channels are from the Guishan Anchorage at the estuary of the Pearl river to the Huangpu Terminal, a length of 153km. This includes Dahao Channel, Rongshutou Channel, Lingding Channel, Chuanbi Channel, Dahu Channel, Nizhoutou Channel, Lianhuashan East and West Channels, Xinsha Channel, Chisha Channel, Dahaozhou Channel and Huangpu Channel.
The depth from Nansha port area to the Guisghan Island Anchorage is 13.0m, with a width of 160m. The depth of the channel from the Huangpu Terminal Xiji turning area to the Nansha Terminal is 11.5m, channel width 160m.
Vessels exceeding the draught limit can be lightened at the anchorages before entering the harbour areas.

Those vessels drawing 6.0m can transit by waiting for the tide, while those drawing over 6.0m and over 7.4m should be lightened respectively at the Xinzao anchorage and where the Diancaozhou Channels merge.
The Xihedao Channel is at the point where the Donghedao and Nanhedao channels merge into one. It is 7km in length, 150m at its narrowest, 13m at its deepest and 2.0m at its shallowest. W of the Zhujiang River W bridge, the channel on the S side has a min depth of 4.0m, while the one on the N side has a min depth of 3.5m, both of which are navigable. The section above Dashatan has the Zhujiang River E bridge and W bridge across it and so is limited by the bridges heights above water clearances, 8.2m and 5.7m respectively.
