Port description

Location: Belize Harbour is situated at the mouth of Haulover Creek, the S arm of Belize River. The harbour is surrounded by numerous bays; the entrance to the port area is via the English Bay Channel.
General overview: The port has one alongside berthing facility, King Pier, with a Ro-Ro berth on the N face of the pier head. Larger ocean going vessels anchor between 1-5km from the quays depending on draught, loading and discharging via barges. A floating oil terminal lies 500m SE of King Pier. An increasing number of cruise vessels are handled by the port.
Exports include: Bananas, citrus fruit, clothing, fisheries products and sugar. Imports include: Building materials, consumer goods, food, machinery and petroleum products..
Traffic figures: Approx 3,392,717t of cargo, 436 vessels and 1,000,000 passengers handled annually.
Load Line zone: North Atlantic Seasonal Tropical Area, Tropical Nov 1 to Jul 15, Summer Jul 16 to Oct 31.
Max size: LOA 204m, draught 10m, 25,281DWT.

Health regulations: Pratique is granted by the Port Health Officer upon arrival at berth or anchorage. International Maritime Health Declaration is required.
Flags: The following flags are required: The flag of the country where the ship is registered, the House flag, Quarantine flag and Belize flag.
Notices of readiness: The NOR should be tendered approx 1 hour after the vessel is cleared by officials.
General notices & regulations: Customs, the Labour Union and port officials should be informed when cargo is to be discharged.
 

Navigation

Sea buoys, fairways and channels: The harbour is approached through English Cay Channel or Southern Grennels Channel and entered through One Man Cay Channel, N of Frank Knoll (17°24'N  088°12'W). The minimum depth in the English Bay Channel is 18.2m.
The directions are as follows:
English Cay to Frank Knoll: From a position in the vicinity of the pilot boarding ground, 17°19.5'N  088°00.5'W off English Cay, the track leads generally WNW across Belize Barrier Reef for approx 12nm, through English Cay Channel, width between 0.4 and 0.6nm, then NW through the narrow entrance to One Man Cay Channel for approx 3.5nm, to a position N of Frank Knoll, 17°24'N  088°12'W.
The alignment (approx 300°) of English Cay leading lights clears the SW end of Buzzard Shoals (17°19.3'N  088°01.7'W) which extends across the entrance to English Cay Channel:
Front light (concrete pillar, 7m in height), (17°19.7'N  088°02.6'W); rear light (300m WNW of the front light).
When past Buzzard Shoals and approx 0.7nm from the front light described above, the track leads NNW for 1nm to the channel entrance, then on various headings through a wide and deep channel marked by light beacons passing:
WSW of Sandbore Light (red concrete pile 5m in height), (17°20.3'N  088°02.1'W) then:
W of Water Cay Spit Light (red concrete pile, 5m in height), (17°21.3'N  088°04.6'W) then:
N of North East Spit Light (black concrete pile, 5m in height), (17°22.8'N  088°05.5'W), then:
SSW of White Grounds Spit Light (red concrete pile, 5m in height), (17°22.7'N  088°07.0'W), then:
NNE and NW of Spanish Cay Spit Light (black concrete pile, 5m in height), (17°22.6'N  088°08.4'W), then:
Between Halfway Light (red concrete pile, 5m in height), (17°22.1'N  088.09.7'W) and Halfway SW Side Light (black concrete pile, 5m in height), (17°21.9'N  088°09.9'W), marking the SW entrance to One Man Cay Channel, then:
SW of Sugar Berth "B" Light (black concrete pile, 5m in height), (17°23.4'N  088°10.6'W), then:
NE of Frank Knoll Light (concrete pile, 5m in height), (17°23.7'N  088°11.9'W).
As an alternative entry into English Channel, the line of bearing of 274° on English Cay rear light passes between shoal depths of 6.7m and 7.0m, (1.25nm E and ESE from English Cay rear light respectively) when approx 0.9nm E of the same light the track leads NNW as described above.
Rambler Shoals to Frank Knoll: From a position ESE of Rambler Shoals, (17°19.4'N  088°13.3'W) the track leads NE for 3.5nm through the Southern Grennels Channel, 0.9nm in width, then NW for 3.5nm through the narrow entrance to One man Cay Channel, marked by light beacons, to a position N of Frank Knoll passing (with positions from Frank Knoll Light, 17°23.7'N  088°11.9'W):
Between Long Cay, (4nm SSE) and Ramseys Cay, (2.5nm SSE), then:
Between Halfway Light (17°22.1'N  088°09.7'W) and Halfway SW Side Light, (17°21.9'N  088°09.9'W) marking the SE entrance to One May Channel, then:
SW of Sugar Berth "B" Light, (17°23.4'N  088°10.6'W), 1.25nm ESE.
The directions for entering the harbour are as follows: From a position N of Frank Knoll, (17°24'N  088°12'W), the track leads N for approx 1.5nm, then as required for King Pier Oil Terminal or anchorage berths, passing:
W of Westward patch, marked by Westward Patch Light, (red concrete pile, 5m in height), (17°25.7'N  088°11.8'W), then:
W of Buckle Rock, (17°26.4'N  088°10.8'W), then:
W of a 5.2m shoal depth, (17°27.0'N  088°10.9'W).
Pilot: Compulsory, pilotage through the channel is permitted throughout 24 hours. ETA should be forwarded to ship's agents 24 hours prior to arrival. The pilot boards outside the reefs in position 17°19.5'N  088°00'W, about 2.3nm E of English Cay Light.
Anchorages: Pilots should be consulted regarding anchorages.
Anchorage is situated 1-3nm S of Belize City, depths 7-9m, mud clear of charted shoals.
Exceptionally, vessels of 9.8m draught have anchored 1.25nm SE of the Cay on Stake Bank( 17°27.7'N  088°07.6'W), depth 11m, mud.
Tidal range and flow: Range 0.2m. 'Northers' lower sea levels by 0.6 to 0.8m.
Dock density: Var.
Weather: Prevailing winds: E'ly.
Principal navigation aids: Robinson Point Light, 17°21.9'N  088°11.9'W.
Fort George Light, (white concrete pillar, red band on base, 16m in height), 17°29.4'N  088°10.9'W.
Three Triangles Light, (black concrete pile, 5m in height), 17°21.4'N  088°12.5'W.
Middle Ground Light, (red concrete pile, 5m in height), 17°28.1'N  088°10.9'W.
Aero Light (radio mast), 17°32.5'N  088°18.5'W.
Charts: BA 959, 1797, 1220, 522. Admiralty Pilot NP69A, NP286(5).
Tugs: Private tugs available.

 

Berths and Cargo

Names/Nos: General cargo/Bulk berths: The Deepwater Pier (King Pier) is 800m in length with a safe draught alongside of 10m. There are also 2 smaller concrete wharves, lengths 60m and 153m; max depths alongside of 2.3m.
Ro-Ro berth: There is a Ro-Ro berth at King Pier, length 25m, max depth alongside 4.6m.
Tanker berths: CBM: Offshore oil berth, depth 6.4m, max draught 6.1m, max 40,000DWT. 5 mooring buoys and a submarine pipeline with 2 x 8in diameter hoses, one dirty and the other clean products, discharge rate 2,000bbls/hr.
Storage: There are 2 warehouses of 7,000m2 and sufficient open air stacking areas.
Barges: Barges are privately owned by Belize Estate and Belize Sugar Storage.

Bunkering: There are no proper bunkering facilities available at present. Fuel is delivered to the dock by road tanker.
Medical facilities: Belize City hospital.
Transport: Nearest airport: Belize International (16km), Philip S W Goldson International Airport.
Crew change: Crew change is arranged by agent.
Consuls: Belgium, Denmark, El Salvador, France, Germany, Guatemala, Honduras, Lebanon, Mexico, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Sweden, United Kingdom and United States.

Developments: It is reported that construction of a new two-berth cruise pier, able to accommodate post-Panamax vessels, commenced in late 2005 with completion expected by November 2006.
