Port description

Location: The port of Antwerp is situated 75km from the North Sea on the River Scheldt.
General overview: Antwerp is a municipal port with cargo handling by private firms. An important multi-product industrial port covering an area of over 14,000ha with over 4,800,000m2 of covered storage areas, 45% of throughput is transit cargo.
The older part of the port has been made accessible for Panamax vessels.
Cargoes include: Petroleum products, ores, coal, steel products, crude oils, cereals, fertilisers, paper and cellulose, sugar and fruit.
Traffic figures: The port handles approx 152,300,000t of cargo annually. This includes approx 28,000,000t of dry bulk cargoes and 33,300,000t of liquid bulk. Approx 6,000,000TEU's handled annually.
Load Line zone: North Atlantic Winter Seasonal Zone II, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.
Max size: Largest vessel handled: "Main Ore" (bulk carrier), 275,000DWT.

 

Pre Arrival Information

ETA's: ETA should be advised at least 6 hours prior to arrival at the pilot station and again when 2 hours from the pilot station. The message should include cargo (with IMO identification if applicable), agent and dimensions (GT, LOA, width). ETA's sent by the vessel's agent are accepted if it is mentioned that the ETA has been sent in the name of the Master.

Customs and immigration: Immigration: Check validation of all ship's documents. Non EC citizens (passengers) should have a valid visa. There are no restrictions on crew providing they are not signing off.
Standard messages: None, except for vessels with draft restrictions which will be advised of river tidal levels.
Notices of readiness: Normally tendered on arrival at pilot station or on berthing.
 

Navigation

Sea buoys, fairways and channels: The approach is from either the Wandelaar or Steenbank Pilot Stations, then the Westerschelde and Schelde lead directly to the river berths at Antwerp or the locks, which give access to the entensive wetdocks.
Turn numbers for passage through the locks are allocated in rotation and signals at each lock entrance indicate the turn number of the vessel to enter the lock. Reports should be made on VHF radio requesting a turn number as follows:

For Zandvlietsluis and                          Berendrechtsluis

On passing No 65A Lightbuoy (starboard hand) (51°22'N  004°08'E)

For Boudesijnsluis and Van Cauwelaertsluis

On crossing the boundary to Zandvliet Radar (51°21'N  004°14'E)

For Royerssluis

On passing No 116 Lightbuoy (port hand) (51°14'N  004°22'E)

Pilot: Pilotage company: Loodswezen regio Scheldemonden.
Port(s) served: Vlissingen, Terneuzen, Ghent and Antwerp.
Contacting pilot: Traffic Centre Steenbank (VHF Ch 64) and Traffic Centre Wandelaar (Ch 65) can be contacted throughout 24 hours.

Other ETA's: Verkeerscentrale Vlissingen (Tel: +31 118 424790; Fax: +31 118 472503) should be contacted at least 24 hours before arrival if bound for an anchorage in Westerschelde and again 6 hours before arrival. If bound for a port contact should be made at least 6 hours prior to arrival.
The reports should contain information on the carriage of any dangerous substances and contaminants.
Pilotage in the Westerschelde is compulsory for all vessels carrying dangerous or polluting goods in bulk or vessels in ballast which are not gas free. Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels with an LOA of over 80m. Pilotage is also compulsory for vessels with a draught greater than 5.5m transiting from Steenbank to Vlissingen Ost via Ostgat.

Helicopter operations: Pilotage helicopter rendezvous points are at:

From Maasvlakte Rotterdam 2nm W of Schouwenbank Buoy with a radius of 4nm; 5nm W of MW3 Buoy with a radius of 5nm.

From Koksijde (south) 2nm SW of Goote Bank buoy with a radius of 4nm.

Helicopter hoisting operations are not possible if winds exceed force 10. Operations are not possible if horizontal visibility is less than 3/4nm or vertical visibility is less than 60m.
Min length of vessel for day operations is 125m and 150m at night.
Multiple pilots: A single pilot is used for vessels bound for Vlissingen. For Terneuzen and Ghent more than one pilot may be used. For Antwerp more than one pilot is always used.
Overcarried pilots: If a pilot is overcarried to the north, the landing place depends on the vessel's destination. If overcarried to the south, pilots are disembarked at Dover.
Anchorages: A reserved anchorage for government vessels and pleasure craft is established off the W bank of the river, between a position 0.65nm below St Anna Pier (51°13.3'N  004°23.5'E) and 0.65nm above.
The anchorage is divided into 3 sections, whose limits are indicated by beacons on the W bank. The central section is reserved for government vessels.
The E limit of the anchorage is indicated by buoys and lightbuoys (special purpose). The anchorage zone is also covered by the red sectors of a light at the rear N beacon and by the light at St Anna Pier.
Tidal range and flow: Nil within docks, within the River Scheldt: mean spring range 5.5m; mean neap range 4.0m.
Dock density: 1000.
Weather: Prevailing winds: SW'ly.
Charts: BA 139, 120, 325, 1406. Admiralty pilot NP28, NP 286(1).
Traffic schemes: There is a VTS for the Schelde and Estuaries (VTS-SM). There are a number of sectors each with an individual VHF Channel. Vessels are required to contact eirther Wandelaar or Steenbank 30 minutes prior to entering the VTS-SM sector, then again on entering the sector. Vessels smaller than 1,150t are not required to report.
Restrictions: From N to S the locks, all on the E bank except Kallosluis, which give access to the wetdocks and basins are (dimensions in m):

Tugs: There are approx 60 tugs available, operating in a pool, (400-11,000bhp).
For vessels proceeding to the river berths off Antwerp the use of two tugs is recommended. Depending on the type of tug used vessels may have to provide their own hawsers. Tug Masters are Flemish speaking and controlled by the pilot.
